It's really not necessary. The leaves die as the weather worsens, and helps nourish the soil as they break down. The leaves also give small birds areas to forage as they disappear. In the spring, the planting bed should be pretty clear for you to separate the plants or just watch them start growing again.

I live in NJ and leave them be until spring when I clip the dead leaves if any. Thus way you can enjoy them until frost.

Cutting them off after they die down is the persons choice. Before my hubby retired I left them and cleaned them up in the spring. Now that he is home all the time, he wants me to cut them off so I put shredded maple leaves on the beds.

Hostas are very tough plants, you can cut them back or let them go. Either way they will be fine. We usually cut ours back in the fall, but don't always.

I also liked to cover them with pine needles after cutting them back.
