Refinished Buffet...Part 1...Maybe?

I have had this buffet for a long time now. And it was fine the way it was (below), but with the changes I have made to the room, I felt like it needed to be refinished. The left side of my room needs to be "lighter". Its needs to be in balance with the right side of the room.

I have thought for a while about what to do with this piece. Do I paint it? If so, what color? I could do it a taupe color to tie in with the fabric on the bench, the place mats & the print on the dishes. I could do it a blue that I pull from my curtains but than would I have too many cool colors in the room? I could try sanding & staining it but its probably just laminate on top of particle board so will that work?
I finally decided to go for it and use the sand & stain option to tie in the antique wood look of my Trash to Treasure piece. What's the worst that could happen? If it doesn't work out I can spray paint the whole thing or replace the top with REAL wood. After all, it isn't exactly a high end item and popping the top off would be simple if it came to that.
You will need a sander and some cut up t-shirts

And some stain of course
