I bought a small real wood cabinet for a garage sale for 3,00.

It is not the color I want. I have a Miniwax stain, in the color I want. What steps do I need to do to prepare for staining it?

sand thoroughly and hopefully you can sand down to an unstained area. The new stain may or may not turn into the color you want because of the previous staining, sorry! Spmetimes the only way you can change the color of stained articles is to sand and paint over the stain.

Jjust sand it down really good. Remove all the sanding dust by vacuuming or damp cloth. You should be ready to restain your cabinet...

You would need to sand it down to bare wood. Then you can stain. If it's painted you would need to strip it, sand to bare wood then stain.

Try using citristrip to remove the existing finish first. Then if need be sand it,clean and restain
