He's probably right. Have you been using Ris-X monthly or something similar? If not your system may not be working and may need pumping.

You can get a second opinion if you have doubts about the RotoRooter guy's honesty, but $1000 sounds possible if you do need new baffles. Baffles are the "tees" at the entrance and exit of your septic tank, designed to ensure that floating scum doesn't back up through the inlet and solid waste doesn't shoot straight through the tank and into the outlet, clogging the drain field where the wastewater goes to dissipate. If you have problems with your baffles (meaning they've collapsed or deteriorated), solid waste is probably either not getting all the way into your septic tank or it's passing right through the tank and damming up your drain field. Either way, your system is backing up and you're going to need it fixed. That means not just new parts, but also excavation work. That kind of labor is rarely cheap. Just pumping your septic tank is likely to add $200 - $300.

Roto Router is a good and reputable company. You can get a second opinion as Alyssa suggests. If the septic hasn't been pumped out for a while it may be time. You should use RID-X monthly as Mike says. It feeds and replenishes the enzymes needed to break down the solids.

Roebic septic treatments are better than Rid-x in my book, and they make an emergency treatment. I had a client who was told she needed a new system, and I poured the Emergency Treatment twice down her drain, and then followed up with the Root Killer Treatment.... and her system was working again.

But I do trust Roto Router, they have always been great when I managed an apartment complex.

you should check to see if both toilet systems have their own vent pipe through the roof & if they are clear. If one is plugged and they try to vent through the other, that may be the problem.
