Heating & Cooling Home Maintenance & Repairs

My air conditioner has a freon leak; it was diagnosed and refilled or charged 1 month ago.

It's been 95-97 in afternoons the past week and my upper unit is blowing cool air, but not keeping it set at the thermostat temp. At night it's fine. Need replaced or just too dang hot out for a/c to keep up with at the hottest hours?

    Hello Annie,

You said "has a freon leak". Did they not repair the leak when it was recharged?

residential air cond systems are only designed to lower temps about 15*f ( 80-82*f ),, you might need to await the return of lower daytime temps

They did not repair the leak; evaporator coil was leaking, said $1,000 to replace it and found a slight restriction at metering device. Greek to me

I wondered about the limits of an AC and its ability to lower from high temps. It just runs and runs for hours as it attempts to work. I've not experience this before and lived in Texas for years where it would go above 100 and stay there all summer. [Notice I moved but the AC worked fine lol]

    Hello Annie,

As Itsreally C said above the maximum in change would be about 15-20 degrees in the air temp. So if it is 90 in the house the AC should blow air about 75 degrees. This number drops as the home cools off. If the return air supply is to small or has a dirty filter this

    will cause a problem.

I would suggest you have a new system installed.

Adding some additional insulation in the attic may help this unit to not have to work so hard...have you had an energy audit lately?
