Lots of options but you need a plan. What's your planting zone? Do you mind raking leaves? If you do, what evergreen types do well in your area? Do you want to attract wildlife? Most important, how close is this area to your house structure? The reason I ask is because I just had to have an enormous maple removed because a previous owner had planted a tree with invasive roots. They were making my walk and driveway begin to heave. Armed with measurements and pictures of your house and yard, go to a local nursery and you'll be so happy you did. They'll know what works right where you are.
