Usually slugs and snails are what attacks hostas. Crushed egg shells on the soil and small saucers of beer work wonders. There are those small black beetles that have been a problem this year. The decimate the whole leaf, but don't eat the veins so the leaves look like lace. I don't know much about them, I just know they loved my raspberry leaves. Never bothered the fruit, just the leaves. Still see a few of them around, but not like earlier this summer.

could be pupae. Spray leaves to prevent more damage. Those innocent butterflies could be laying eggs that hatch and destroy the leaves

Could be snails. Check under bottom leaves. If snails or slugs put beer in a throw away pie plates. One in each area that you find them. They will go into beer & die.
