I am doing the same thing to add a few inches to one side of my single car driveway, but I am using cement colored rectangular pavers. We just dig the soil to the depth of the paver, make sure it is level with the driveway and done. We are not setting it in anything but the dirt and clay that is there already. Just make sure you fill in the side away from the driveway very firmly to make sure it will stay in place and not go sideways the first good rain or if it is driven on. We have never done the sand and gravel first and have had good luck with the seating area out front we did with pavers last summer the same way.
It would likely be best to have the tops of the bricks the same height as the driveway. To accomplish this you'll need to dig trenches alongside the driveway and firmly pack the ground at the bottom of the trench. Add and pack gravel in the trench and then add and pack sand before you place the rows of bricks -- then add more sand between the bricks.
