I am at war with them all the time in the summer. I use several methods using the yellow traps you see hanging around. Home Depot has them. When they first start showing up, I bait those traps with the little tubes of attractant that the company sells. I have had my traps for quite a few years so I just buy the attractant and bait the traps. The attractant will be good for about 6 weeks, then will have to be changed when the stop coming to the trap.
BAIT THE TRAPS INSIDE AND WASH YOUR HANDS WELL BEFORE HANGING THE TRAPS OUTSIDE. THE WASPS MAY AND SOMETIMES DO ATTACT YOU IF THEY SMELL IT ON YOUR HANDS.
It seems that about the end of June they are not attracted to that any longer. Then, I switch to canned pear juice in the trap. They like that for awhile.
After that I have just found this year that a piece of raw beef, hamburger works with some beef blood really attracts them. I did this for the first time this year. I now do not see many around. It caught a lot of them. Get some blood fro a butcher to pour over the meat bait.
Usually this time of late summer, I hunt them with my BB gun. You would be surprised how many I get with the old Daisy. I wet down a small part of my yard and the water attracts them to shoot. I always shoot into the grass never flying. Not safe to do that. I sometimes put a piece of paper in the yard with a couple of small pieces of meat on it. Then shoot them when they come to the paper.
The BB gun doesn't get as many as the trap but when the stop coming to the trap is fun to do.
I read on the computer how to make traps but gave up on those as I never got what they got on their pictures.
Also actively look for their nests through the summer and spray them with the Spectracide spray from Home Depot. It really drops them. It also has a long spry if needed. Be carful which way the breeze is blowing so you don't get it in your eyes.
It seems that methods of attracting them change through the summer and you Just have to go with what they want. I think it's sex early on and food later in the summer.
Oh by the way they sometimes are actually able to find their way out of the traps. I keep an eye on them during the day and when they have a lot of wasps flying around in them and they are gone in the late afternoon, I sometimes take the trap down when there are a lot in there and put them in the freezer for an hour or so and then re hang them. If you put them in a bucket of water, that works too but you have to keep changing whatever attractant you are using.
That is pretty much my plan of attack. It seems that from one summer to the next, something always changes.
