The finish on your unit was manufactured to be smooth and glossy, and it is most likely not real wood. So, unfortunately it will be very difficult to try to change the color resulting in a finish that will evenly adhere to the surface, not streak, and have any lasting durability.

Instead of going to all the messy work of attempting to change the color by painting, only to arrive at a result that may not meet with your expectations, how about changing the color of the unit with fabric panel pieces? Put runner, or length of fabric across the top white part, then have individual panels hanging down over the sections of the unit.

The look woud be much easier to change if you tired of the color, would make the area look warmer, and could also be swapped out according to seasons.

If you try and fail you'll have a real mess. The unit matches the carpet. It isn't an eyesore so don't make it one.

You can give it a light sanding and prime it before painting. Then, pretty much any paint should adhere to it

you can just paint it and seal it or try to take off the top layer and put a new one on
