countertops in kitchen...is there a way to do this without having to replace old with new? Nothing wrong with them, just need color change. Cabinet doors....can new ones replace current ones or is there some magic to upgrading style without changing?

You can purchase special paint for counter tops. For the cabinets you can also paint them and add new hardware. Some people even add a decorative trim to the cabinets doors to dress them up.

A lot depends on your budget. Countertop choices range from budget-friendly options like paint (Rustoleum and Giani make kits) to adhesive film (many get high ratings from consumers, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010CM6W52/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_R1UTzbPG9CCJC ), then up to new laminate or tile, and finally to replacement with real stone, concrete, stainless steel or butcher block. For cabinets, painting is the lowest-cost option, followed by dressing them up with wood trim before you paint, then refacing, then finally replacement. I'm sure Hometalkers would be happy to give you more specific advice if you post a picture and provide a little more detail on the look you're aiming for.

Rustoleum and Giani both offer countertop restoration kits.
