It is ugly, but nothing works better than the fly strips you tack to the ceiling. They are easy to take down if company is coming, but they really do help. If you bring apples into the house, make sure you wash them well as soon as they come in the door. That will help a lot. I get them around my tomato plants because some of the little guys tend to split easy and they really attack them. There are traps you can buy or you can make your own, there are recipes here at Hometalk that you could search for easily. They all work, so you can choose your poison, so to speak.
Set a small bowl of honey in a larger bowl of water. They will eat the honey and fall in the water.... Also you can use a picnic cover shield that you cover dishes with when you are camping. Wait till the honey bowl is covered with flies nad cover it with the shield. Can get a dollar tree.
Get a 1/2 gallon milk jug, 1 Qt. vinegar, 1 Qt. water, 1 cup sugar and 1 very ripe banana peel, tie it to a limb close to the tree..up as high as you can reach. If you do this before the tree has blossoms it will prevent worms and gnats They go into the jug and can't get out.
