How do I care for English Ivy inside my home?

I unfortunately killed one relatively soon after buying it and it was in really good condition when I bought it however died soon after. I asked the place where I bought it and she said it may have been mites as they get mites inside really easily. She added that I would have to keep it clean (wash it) weekly but didn't tell me how or with what and I would also like to know of lack of light may have been an issue, in other words how much light does English Ivy prefer? The last question I had was concerning watering, how often and how much. I have purchased a new one but left it outside until I can find out how to care for inside and it is doing really well outside but I love how it looks and would like it to last the winter so would like to bring it inside as soon as possible.
