They have a den somewhere close by. See if you can find it, then go from there! Be careful, they are vicious when scared. My Dad was bitten by one!

Good Afternoon Frankdeleon :) My sister lived many years with a trapper and one day they checked the traps and he took the possum out and was carrying it back to the truck when a movement caught my sister's eye and the dog gone thing was raising up to bite her boyfriend! Thank goodness he didn't, and they had possum stew for a few nights for dinner, and a few dollars in their pocket for the skin. If I were you I would call animal control and let them deal with it since you don't want to chance picking up a live one who is "playing possum" and end up hurt. Ask them how soon they will be out to get rid of the dead ones in the yard, or who you should contact to take them away, or how you will know if one is TRULY dead is YOU are the one who has to bag them up and dispose of them. Animal control in your county will investigate into why the possum are dying. Could be poisoning or could be a disease; either way, they will find out and take care of it. Good Luck and thanks for asking HOMETALK for answers.

    Someone must be poisoning them.

  • Chances are someone is using poison. If you have pets or kids, keep them away from the area till you can clean it up and disinfect it. Contact your local animal control authorities as they either need to know or may be aware of any diseases that might otherwise be killing them. Opossums can be anywhere and do not need trees, I had them when I lived in the middle of a big city, they would come around at night and nibble on the dry cat food I left out for the feral cats.

Has someone poisoned them? Are they injured? Are they playing possum?
