Send it out for professional cleaning...to someone who specializes in this type of rug cleaning.....Typically, these rugs, from overseas, have been washed in soap and water, rinsed and then dried in the hot sun on hot rocks. That rug will weigh hundreds of pounds when it is wet. It is probably worth a lot of money. In my area it runs about $250 for this type of rug cleaning at the most reputable cleaner. It should be inspected for needed repairs as well. These rugs can become quite delicate when wet and damage easily, especially if hand tied.

I haven't tried it myself as my rugs are synthetic, but this was the recommended washing directions:

  • Earlene is correct! I have a smaller one that I have cleaned by a proper professional. Worth the money for the investment.

When you say Persian are you referring to the style or the country of origin?

If this is a 150 year old Persian rug from Iran then professionally clean.

If it's a newer machine made rug take it outside and spray with a hose on a warm sunny day. Let it dry in the sun. You can use a light soap solution to clean.

It would be good if you had a deck or patio to spread the rug out on.
