  • You need to make the environment unfriendly for them. And that is hard as these critters adapt quickly to changes. If the critters are digging your plants you can put all sorts of deterrents that will scare them away. The issue is however the environment. If you have a lot of trees, and perhaps neighbors that have bird feeders, It will be almost impossible to keep them out of your yard.
  • Catch & release is a quick short term fix, but wont keep them away The biggest thing is don't give them areas or ways to get into your house: http://blog.sls-construction.com/2010/safety-sunday-rodent-prevention

I don't know because we also are dealing with the same issue. Our problem is that our entire neighborhood is loaded with oak trees. We have done everything to "squirrel proof" our home and they still create a way into the attic. I am exhausted trying to deter them!!
  • Squirrels torment my Australian Shepherd and Jack/Fox mix. We are surrounded by oaks like you Sherilyn and the squirrels have litters 2 times a year which makes it even worse. It has helped having dogs and cats that go out but for those of you who do not have that natural squirrel deterrent you could try coyote, bobcat, or other predatory urine sold at many hunting stores or even on the internet. It does help but you have to wear latex gloves because the smell stays on you! To keep squirrels out of your home, you could try chicken wire around any place where they can squeeze through or chew through. It has helped and kept them out of our home. We put chicken wire around the inside of the garage and eave. Good luck.

One of the problems with them is that they do not have any enemies around...AND people think they are cute and feed them. I have heard that having outdoor cats help.

We live trap them and relocate them a few miles away. I hate to do it, but I love my garden and so do they!!! They dig up everything!!!

@Madelyn Upleger We have a squirrel trap and we spray paint a little on their body to see if they come back, one did! Hop in the car and make sure you transport them a distance from your home! Okay, we have 2 new ones now....

YES! These squirrels are driving me crazy and driving the birds away! If anyone has any luck with the urine idea please let me know! They invaded my attic so bad we had to replace all the undereve screens with metal protectors, Uggh!!!

I have 2 large dogs (as you can see). The squirrels just hop from the garage to the trees and drive my dogs crazy!! Heaven help the one that misses the branch! I have red squirrels living in my garage and haven't been able to get rid of them. Part of the problem is they can get through the tiniest little space. I spoke with animal control in my area and their advise was warfarin which I cannot bring myself to do. Every summer I just try to find the area they are coming in from and patch it up the best I can.

I suggest a flame thrower...just kidding! We also have tons of them. We have 3 large dogs which helps. The squirrels also get into the wiring on cars and eat it. We have tried trapping them, and it has only worked once. One got into my husband's company car's engine area. He drove to work and the squirrel jumped out 40 miles from home.... I'm rambling, but this problem is absolutely infuriating. Can't do poison because of the other wild animals. I do have one set of bird feeders, but I refuse to stop feeding birds.

Put hot pepper (cayenne) in your feeder. I've read birds don't notice but squirrels get lit up. Worth a try...

we have had squirrels , and chipmunks , rabbits and raccoons. We presently have 4 miniature Schnauzers .........no more squirrels , chipmunks rabbits or raccoons . The critters dont have a chance to run rampant anymore !

I believe in and use poison.....as much as I hate it the destruction is unbelievable. I also use cayenne pepper on plants and flower buds that they like to eat. It will keep them off your stuff but you have to reapply when it rains. Cute little buggers but very destructive.

    Get dogs. Dogs will help.
