Use a plumb bob. It hanget straight down and can be your guide.

If however, you want the sides of what you are hanging vertically to match the edge of your wall, measure evenly from the nearest edge at the height of the bottom, middle, and top of your object. Use that line as your guide.

It depends on what you are trying to hang. Most artwork, wall art, etc is usually hung at about eye level...but it is a personal preference. try using large sheets of paper and position them at different heights to see what appeals to you.
