Look at pictures of chess sets online and use polymer clay or air dry clay to make the tops of chess pieces and insert into the bottles.
I have nothing creative to add, just think it is a really cool idea and love William's suggestion. Very creative thinking!
You could use pictures, either from computer or drawn by you, on each bottle.
Shop for small toys in the shapes you need....paint them two different colors and glue them to the tops of the bottles. Or find someone with a 3-D printer to make you a set that fits the bottles.
