For this farmhouse inspired project we will transform paper mache letters into faux rusty metal letters with a few simple ingredients!
8" Paper Mache Letters from Hobby Lobby
Select the word or name you'd like for your sign, purchase the selected letters from your local craft store and cut a pine board to fit behind them. You will need the following along with your board & letters:Silver Spray PaintCinnamonStain in the color of your choiceHot Glue & Hot Glue Gun
Minwax water based stain & a car wash sponge
The first thing you will want to do is stain the wood board, which will be the base of your sign. We recommend using a water based stain and a sponge because they work well for a no-mess application. Just dip sponge into stain, then rub to apply in the direction of the week grain. Make sure stain covers the top surface as well as along the edges, then wipe off any excess. Allow to dry.
Next, spray your paper mache letters with silver spray paint. No perfection required for this project since we are going for an aged look. Just make sure you get some on the top surface and sides of your letters.
From the kitchen grab our secret for faux rust - Cinnamon! Sprinkle onto wet spray paint.
Continue to develop the rusty look you desire by layering spray paint and cinnamon. Once you get the perfect mix, allow to dry.
Adhere your letters to your wood sign base using hot glue or your favorite adhesive.
ENJOY -the new farmhouse inspired sign you created!

So in the video , they use acrylic paint after applying the cinnamon , but nothing in the instruction part mentions this... is it needed?

This is probably a dumb question but I still would like to ask so someone can make my phobia go away I guess lol! Would the cinnamon attract any unwanted critters? Don't need those in the house. Or would the the paint combo repel any bugs?

    Thank you!

Was that like a clear coat at the end?
