What varnish can I use

I want to paint a vintage step ladder in chalk paint but blended in an aged look. However, I have not been able to get an outside varnish that is suitable over paint. Even the taught varnish says it's not to be used over paint but on raw wood. This is crazy, I've seen painted yaghts. What do they use. I have looked in B+Q and Homebase.

YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF TRYING THIS STYLE WITH GLOSS PAINT...............

Why not use a spray polyurethane ? it comes in Satin and Glossy and there are types for indoor or outdoor use... Depends on where you are going to display the ladder? You can buy it at any Basic Home builders supply... Lowes, Home Depot or any store that sells paint... or just use a paste Car Wax and buff by hand...

Oh thank you For both suggestions. I will try that. The whole point is to make it as waterproof as possible as I intend to put plants on it.
