How can I update a plain closet?

Paint.
All of the home improvement stores carry closet inserts in a huge variety of colors-if you need more space or organization that may be the way to go. If you just want to change the outward appearance then paint is the easiest. You could also use it to hang posters on for a kids room or to tie into the theme of any room ( just use thumbtacks and push them all the way in so when the doors are slid open it doesn't tear the poster). You could also replace them with mirrored closet doors to make the room appear larger and to use while getting dressed. I have done all of these and they have made a huge difference in each room! Paint it black, line it with fluorescent posters, put up a blacklight, put all your kid's shirts, pants, shoes, backpacks and various other luminate paraphernalia in it and you
have a unique closet!!
A pic would help. Is it a door you mean? single slab type? If so, you could apply some decorative molding.
Put some contact paper on one wall, and paint the rest. EJL
