Early spring or fall is the best time to split them. If you do it when it is hot out they get too stressed and might not make it.

It is easiest when they first start to come up in the spring. The easiest way to do this if you have a lot to divide is look up the different plants in case some may need to get done in the fall. I use Gardeningknowhow.com. They have good articles on any plant you can think of and have propagation, diseases, insects problems and care, often in different articles to keep on the subject.

The best time is fall especially if you are splitting bulbs. I've done it during all seasons with bulbs and they've done fine. But the best time is fall when plants are starting to enter their dormant phase.
