Got this off a search... To get bigger flowers, cut them all the way back. In late winter or early spring, these shrubs can be cut all the way back to the ground. Smooth hydrangeas will produce much larger blooms if pruned hard like this each year, but many gardeners opt for smaller blooms on sturdier stems.
It all depends on what type of hydrangea you have. Some like to be cut back while others don't. Mine flower off of what in winter many think are dead branches, so I don't cut them back at all.
If you're in a colder climate, you should cover them with straw and tuck them in for the long winter. I use a tomato cage around my smaller one and fill it with the straw.
I leave mine alone and in the spring once buds appear I trim off only the dead wood. Mine creates a privacy screen for the bathroom window along with a honeysuckle bush.
