Id like to paint my kitchen cabinets but it wont be easy

My cabinets are made out of Alder and the wood surface is very very smooth. My old cabinets in a previous home were Oak and I wasn't the slightest bit timid about painting them, and they did turn out great. The grain pretty much hid any imperfections. Alder has NO grain, its almost smooth like laminate. I don't want to pay the $3-5k I was quoted for this job so I'd like to know if anyone has successfully painted smooth wood like Alder. I know if I brush it every stroke will show. If I shoot it with a sprayer I worry about spatter and clogs which I have encountered with my last spray gun attempt. Any success stories? Before and after pics?

Just clean them well with TSP. You can also do a fine sand on them with steel wool. Make sure to prime first to ensure a good bond.

Rust-Oleum makes EXCELLENT refinishing kits. They're multi-step and kind of time consuming, but not difficult and can truly transform existing cabinets.

Beautiful cabinets, sure you want to paint them, look great with your countertops and floors. But if paint you must, give a light sand, prime, and paint. I use a 3" and 6" smooth foam roller, and then brush off lightly with a good badger brush to remove any texture.

Im just worried about brush strokes and texture showing. I guess I could experiment on a smooth piece of wood. I just refinished a dresser with a foam roller and I guess it didnt leave brush strokes so perhaps it'll be OK.

I use Zinser 1-2-3 primer first and then 2 coats of paint (prefer Behr) and have had great results

Dixie Belle Paint is the best solution! It is a mineral paint that has exceptional adhesion. All you have to do is clean your cabinets very well with their White Lightning cleaner, apply two THIN coats of paint, and seal with their Gator Hide protective finish. Check them out. The cost will be minimal, and the result is fantastic! PS No brush strokes if you very lightly sand after each coat of paint.

I Just Painted My Kitchen Cabinets , They were very old Maple , and a very smooth surface . I washed them down with just plain warm water , and We Used Scotch Bright Burgundy Sanding pads , Wiped them down again to remove the dust from the sanding . It was easier than sandpaper, or steel wool, Then we applied 2 coats of Kilz For Cabinets , And we used HGTV Home Paint for the Cabinets . It worked Great . WE Put on 2 coats . We rolled all the parts that could be rolled , and brushed the rest . I am very happy with the results . Make sure you remove or cover your appliances. Dust gets inside everything .. It took us 4 days . Good Luck ..

Annie Sloan chalk paint!! No sanding. No priming. Do a google search for "Annie Sloan chalk paint kitchen cabinets" and you will find tons and tons of pics and how-tos. I am in love with this paint. Have painted cabinets, furniture, and even a tile foyer floor!

You might want to paint or wallpaper the center panels of the doors first and see how you like that. Not as much wood everywhere, but still some. I actually like your cabinets the way they are!
