Good Afternoon Liz Cairo-Eagan :) For a plain white ceiling you could always add interest stencils or moulding or lighting or wallpaper (you could wallpaper the entire thing rather than stenciling with paint or you could cut out shapes that you like --- fluer-dis-leis or whatever --- from your favorite wallpaper pattern and just add those to the ceiling. OR you could just use colorful paint to make stripes or swirls or whatever suits YOUR fancy (it is YOUR house after all) ;) Below is a link to show you what I mean:

in link below look for the decoupaged ceiling fan for interesting effect -- you can use anything that appeals to you but as you can see it certainly beats a plin fan blade) ;)

(this one is a bit much -- like the game TWISTER has been transferred to the ceiling, but you get the idea about painting or stenciling LOL)

Okay, so now you have al lthe thoughts that were in MY head - -well, not ALL of them, but enough of them ;) Good Luck. Thanks for using HOMETALK :)
what's wrong with white? If you don't want insects, paint it haint blue like ceilings of porches down south. That's actually color...google it.....
I always think a pale blue ceiling looks wonderful. Not a baby blue, but a pale, misty blue. It opens up the room and gives the ceiling an appearance of airiness like the sky. It is a color that goes well with most decor as well.
I'm about to paint my bedroom ceiling lavender. It's currently pale green, matches the walls. You could stencil it. I've got a room with a metal medallion around the light fixture. Got an open metal medallion from Hobby Lobby online, drilled out the center, removed chandelier , placed the medallion, replaced the chandelier. The medallion is held up by the fixture and isn't attached to the actual ceiling, just looks like it. Do some textured stencils and highlight them by paint.
The guest bedroom would look nice with a ceiling fan. The fan has 3 speeds, and it circularates the air in the room. Install it in the center or over the bed. Good Luck!
