I agree with Elizabeth, though a good hardwood floor will never go out of style.
I absolutely love the vinyl plank flooring that is available now. It comes in lots of cool patterns, is 100% waterproof, can go over anything but carpeting, and all you need to install it is a utility knife to cut it. It is fairly reasonable in price and is available at most home centers. It's a great product!
i love my porcelain "wood " plant floors. Easy to clean many, many different colors and styles, waterproof and durable. However, if you drop a plate or glass on it , they will break. The tile hasn't chipped at all though. But I also agree with Michele, vinyl plank flooring is lovely

We put in a laminite (wood) floor that looks exactly like wood, but is much more durable. It does not scratch and it's easy to keep clean.
A relative just put in vinyl plank flooring and it's not only beautiful, but it's waterproof which most laminate floors are not. I'm seriously considering doing the same in a different color.
