It has become unsightly now that Fall is here. Can I cut back now or just what can I do to insure beautiful, healthy Hosta next year?

In the fall ,we mow down our hostas. We ve had them for years and they always come back in the spring. They are so big ,we have to dig them up and device them and give about hAlf of them away. They have been beautiful for years.

I always cut down the flowers and leave the leaves until the frost kills them. Sometimes I clean the hosta bed in the late fall; other times I clean it in the spring. It doesn't seem to make a big difference.

On the other hand, if the leaves have become unsightly but they have not yet been damaged by frost, maybe you need to check to see if they are diseased or if there is insect damage. If so, identify the problem and treat it accordingly.

I also cut my hostas down to the soil. Then I cover with mulch. They come back every spring. I recommend splitting them in the spring when they are still little. Best of luck to you.
