Does it make sense to buy a package from a large building supply company or just buy as needed?

  • I do not know specifically about NM, but I would certainly price it out. A kit is a bit easier to assemble as everything is pre cut and delivered to your site. My concern is the kits do not always use top grade materials. I would entertain a few bids from local contractors to see what they would charge, and I would visit a commecial lumberyard (not Home Depot or Lowes), and have the staff help you figure out how much raw material you need to order.

If you have the skill, DIY is much less expensive than a kit. Do the numbers and buy the basics you KNOW you will need. Usually, large quantities can be purchased at a slight discount. A few trips to the lumber/hardware store will be a nice break. You'll need another set of hands and back.

Built a few garages over time. If you DIY you will need to pull permits and have inspections. Built a few kit garages and they are so easy and no permits. Nine guys and completed in one weekend.

I would say it depends on your level of building experience. If you have the skills to build one from scratch, it may come out cheaper to buy the materials and do it yourself. If not, the kits are probably simpler to put together than starting from scratch.
