Try some comet cleaner and a wire brush. Once you get it off rinse and dry it. Check at the home improvement store for a sealer to use on it to keep it from rusting again.

Try WD-40 it melts rust............
Try CLR, it is suppose to clean rust. Good Luck!
We redid my old bathroom showers, and they are aluminum and I used Coke to soak the drain in and it cleaned it beautifully. Don't use diet coke, and let it set then used one of the fine scrubbing pads that you can get at the 99 cent store for $1. a pkg. I did lots of scrubbing on two bathrooms, but am more than pleased with this. Tougher stains might need the CRL bathroom cleaner. There are several types of this so make sure you choose the right one for the project you need. Good Luck
