Do you Buy the Creme Cakes from the Grocery Store? Hate to throw out the plastic container.. Look at this...!!
Sharing an idea I had a couple of years ago. Still a good idea and this is how It came to be.. My Cake container from the grocers was black.. but it doesn't matter, because all you want is the Top Dome to work with..
I had picked up this pretty little cake stand and loved it, but things went stale while waiting for us to eat it all... icon .. I had tried one of the Glass Cake stands with the Glass Dome, but I could barely lift the top and if I didn't lick my fingers well enough after cutting a piece of cake, things got slippery icon
I did not want to lose this pretty stand... but i also didn't want stale goodies.. icon
So I gathered some wire, and pliers and the top from that grocery cake container.. and went to work... what fun..
There was an indention in the lid of my plastic container, so I filled that with paint and let it dry.. (the paint is on the top of the lid, this picture shows the underneath view)....then poked a hole as best I could in the center, and using a bead and some wire with a loop curled in the end so it would stay.. I fed the wire up through the bottom of the lid... I used a glob of glue and let that sit for a bit..
So now you have a wire sticking up through the plastic lid... have fun and start piling some beads on it.. use a touch of glue in places, to keep things straight.. When you have what you want, pull firmly and twist a loop on the very top with your pliers and cut the wire close to the top of the last bead, if you have to, you can use the pliers to tighten the loop even more after the cut...... icon
And now you have a lightweight whimsical cake stand with lid... Mine has covered a lot of goodies and is still clear and solid... and I can lift the lid with sticky or slippery hands... icon

Hi Lauren. This is brilliant. It looks to me like, besides the buttons, you used something clear to use as a handle but I can't tell what it is. Can you clarify what it is please.

It looks stunning! But why fill an indention on lid with paint? Why not leave it clear? I'm confused. Tx!

What a wonderful idea Lauren! So pretty and since I've developed arthritis and carpel tunnel syndrome in my wrists this is exactly what I need! I also have a small red, fluted edge 6 " "treat" stand and have at times made my husband something special and presented it on this stand but I have no top, so now I'm on the lookout for anything packaged from the store with a clear dome plastic top .) Like others, i have amazed a cake stand collection but only one dome, that I swear weighs 50 lbs. !!! lol So this is definitely on my to-do list, Thank you so much. Have a great holiday season and beyon!
