you should pinch a mum back to 4-5 inches until July 4th..then the plants won't be so leggy and fall over. Mine dies back in the winter, than we start the same procedure the next spring
right after the blooms are all dead... any later than that & you will cut of next year's buds.
AND all those clipping can be pushed into potting soil (or really well amended garden soil) water water water(miracle grow doesn't hurt! lol) and you have a WHOLE BUNCH of new mum plants...! We used to just cut ours back in July to about 3-4 inches - even if they'd already bloomed or were blooming - they could never decide when they wanted to flower! lol
In the fall of the year. Then just throw away the stubble, and it will come up great in the spring. This will enable the flowers to get a good rest, thru the winter months. Enjoy. We cut ours down to about 8" in the fall., and all is fine. J.
I never cut mine back at all and they bloom fabulously and multiply all by themselves. I simply smoosh off the blooms after they have dried completely.
When it comes to pruning, I use the old farmer's method: from Spring thru Fall only prune during months that have a "R" in their name. So, you can prune in April, but not in May. May does not contain a R. This is easy for me to remember and it always works well for me.
