Can I clean tacky varnish?

My dining room chairs have varnish that is starting to get tacky on the top of the chairs. I'm hoping to clean it, but if I have to will refinish them. Not sure how or what is good to use.

Someone else may have a better idea, but we had the same problem. I tried several cleaning methods, but we ended up sanding and refinishing.

This was my husband's suggestion. May just end up doing this. Thank you for your suggestion.

Try using a mixture of pure ammonia and water...about half and half. It will remove most gunk from wood without damaging the finish. Test it in a small area first.

Never thought of that. Will try a test area as you suggest, otherwise on my way to refinishing. Thank you for your suggestion.

Formby's explains the process. Cheaper alternative is half acetone and half laquer thinner. Necessary to get rid of the goop and gum build up. This does not work on poly. Use a good varnish product.
