15 years ago I got tired of the ugly salmon tile in my bath. It wasn't even cool retro tile, just tired. So I bought some TSP and scrubbed down all the tile. I then used one coat of Kilz and then two coats of antique white gloss. It remains in excellent shape. The only chips are those trim tile I painted black enamel and are behind the litter box! I would encourage painting as it makes such a big difference for a little money and a little elbow grease.
