Have painted Drywall with eggshell finish. what to install glass tile mosaic. Is it necessary to install backer board or can tile be installed directly to painted surface. Tile will not touch a wet area.
Hi! I just installed a white subway tile backsplash in my new kitchen. The walls were unfinished drywall (just taped and mud - no paint). So, installing on the painted surface will be fine!
As long as there is not alot of moisture, you can apply tile to your drywall without backer board.
I agree! No problem tiling over painted drywall. No need for tile backer board. Actually it's better to tile over a painted surface so the drywall doesn't suck the moisture out of the thinset causing premature failure.
Per Proreferral.com, if the sheetrock is clean, level and in good repair, it will hold the weight of the tile with no problem. Once the tile work is grouted, it will have no problem. With the minimal moisture exposure and a good tile setting, you don't have to worry about potential water damage. If you think about it, in a large number of kitchens, sheetrock is the backsplash. They have nothing but a painted or wallpapered wall for a backsplash. They have no problem at all with the moisture in the kitchen. Take your time and get your lines straight. If your grout lines are not straight it will make even the most expensive tile look awful. Once the grout is applied, it's pretty much permanent.
