Not sure of your location, but I am in Nebraska. While we don't normally have an issue until the farmers bring in the bean fields, they are really invasive and get into everything. They are usually gone with the first hard frost.

Beetles last for 30-50 days. Their season lasts from June when they begin to emerge to the first frost in the fall. If you want to have a fighting chance against them, you might try applying a grub control to your lawn in late summer or early fall. Since they weather the winter underground, the grub control might help stop them before they emerge from your ground to take on your plants. It doesn't stop the neighbor's beetles from snacking on your plants, but it's a start.

Hi Jane, I too had a terrible problem with Japanese beetles, for a permanent solution, you will have to treat you lawn for grubs ( I think Lowes has some stuff for that ) since that's how they start out but in the short run, I sprayed my bushes with a mix of water and a few drops of dawn detergent. It took about two weeks for the last of them to be gone . I saw a mention of something called "Milky Spore" ( for the grubs ) which is a natural solution but I haven't used that Hope this helps Mike
