It is 2 pieces..The top piece does have the plate grooves on the shelves..The 2 smaller drawers have felt and dividers.
  • Carole Alden Carole Alden on Feb 26, 2014
I love it as is too. Lots of good storage space too.
  • Patty Patty on Feb 26, 2014
I agree, it is a beautiful piece. I would just wax it with a dark wax, and leave it as is.
  • Gail Salminen Gail Salminen on Feb 26, 2014
What a beautiful piece. So many things you could do. What is your taste and what will be in the room with it and what room will you use it in. You could do a search for buffet renewals on this site - sooooo many ideas here from many creative people. I can see it refinished with a different wood finish or painted. One thing for sure I would love to see your finished product. Please post a pic.
  • Cori Warner Cori Warner on Feb 26, 2014
Paint it, change the hardware, and put a pretty paper or fabric on the back part behind the shelves. Would be pretty with black glaze over off-white paint, the details would really pop.
    • KathrynElizabeth Etier KathrynElizabeth Etier on Feb 27, 2014
@Cori from The Flying C , I was going to suggest the same thing: new hardware, pretty paper, and paint. Or paint the outside and shelves one color and choose another color from the same color card for the inside walls of the hutch.
  • Cori Warner Cori Warner on Feb 26, 2014
If you keep the wood finish, I would degloss it, stain in a darker color, and go with distressed silver hardware. The color now is a bit dated.
  • Linda P Linda P on Feb 27, 2014
thank you all for your input..i will keep you posted to what I decide.
  • Diane C Diane C on Feb 27, 2014
It appears to be a beautiful piece and in good condition. You may find once it is filled with the items you love will make a difference. Maybe, change up some of the room's decor and accent pieces. Wait awhile, you may find you love it just as is.I rushed into painting a few pieces and now regret!!!!
  • Cindy Haskell Cindy Haskell on Feb 27, 2014
I agree with Diane C....once filled with your items, it may brighten up the piece! Gorgeous as is!!
  • Michele Eures Michele Eures on Feb 27, 2014
I like Cori Warner's ideas. I think the design would lend itself well to some colorful paint. The swirls and curls of all the beveled work would look great with a deeper color. I'm interested to see what you decide.

What a lovely piece, I've always loved these open hutches with plates standing up on them. Hard to believe it was just left in your home! Consider painting this in a two-toned manner, painting some parts and leaves some parts natural. (At least to top of the base for example.) I love chalk paint, waxed. There are lots of two-tone furniture examples out there to study, or look on my blog as this is my own personal. preferred style of painting. Good luck and have fun with it!
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Feb 27, 2014
One thing about the natural wood is that it is easy to keep clean and it does not stain easily...that is why so much of it has survived over the years. You might want to add some lights in the top of this and just give it a good polish. It is a stunning piece! Keep in mind that all this "painted" stuff is going to go out of style just as did cracking!
  • Patsy Patsy on Feb 27, 2014
I really like it the way it is, except I might change the hardware.
  • Karyl Karyl on Feb 28, 2014
I have a piece very similar to that except that mine has 3 glass doors at the top. I'm taking the doors off so that it will be the open concept. I'm sanding it, then making a milk paint using water, plaster of paris and granny apple green paint. It will be painted and sit in front of a white bead board wall. Good luck with your hutch!
  • Roberta Eagleston Roberta Eagleston on Feb 28, 2014
Everyone seems to paint and call it shabby chic. Used to be called antique finish back in the day. This will fade out just as it did. If you paint you will be taking the paint off when the fad is no longer popular. I suggest you remove the finish, seal with satin and change hardware.
  • Helen Yansak Helen Yansak on Feb 28, 2014
Well I would take off the top and re-purpose the bottom into a vanity for my bathroom. Chalk paint the piece in a great color or antique white or leave as is. the top I think I might make into a hanging shelf for a dining room, or bedroom, even an office. Think out of the box!!! Great piece.
  • Brendalee Perryman Brendalee Perryman on Feb 28, 2014
please leave it if you dont lke it trade it on craigs list for something you do like
  • Elizabeth Sagarminaga Elizabeth Sagarminaga on Feb 28, 2014
This is a lovely piece. Pls leave it as it is. Use it to show off your crockery and cutlery. The max variation I would think, is converting it into a glass-doored chest although it would be a shame to waste all this lovely natural wood. Alternatively, you could use the upper part to show off your curios and the bottom part for storage.
  • DebLynn DebLynn on Feb 28, 2014
I DO like painted reclaimed furniture….However, this piece shows no wear or damage so I would just cover or paint the back of the piece with paint or fabric on foam board which they carry at craft or $ Stores so you can easily change it for later…HAVE FUN!
  • Ladybea Bikerchick Ladybea Bikerchick on Feb 28, 2014
What a beautiful piece. I would paint it white/wash and use it to display different china plates. Use the bottom to store table cloths, place mats and serving trays.
  • Martha Henriod Martha Henriod on Feb 28, 2014
I'd paint it and have fun - it's not like it's a family heirloom. You can always sand it back down if you want it to be the original wood.
  • Liliana Wells Liliana Wells on Feb 28, 2014
Changing the hardware will give it a new look without changing it drasticaly. If you then decide to paint, then do so. But it looks in good enough condition to use as is.
  • CC CC on Feb 28, 2014
I would leave it alone. Why fix what's not broken? Everyone wants to paint, refinish, decoupage stuff to items when there's nothing wrong with it in the first place. The reason items are made with beautiful woods is so you can see the grain and the life and story the tree has to tell us without using words. I say paint away on MDF and cheap fiber board and Items like that...but enjoy the priceless gift unpainted wood has to offer us. I would just use some colorful baskets on the top and on the shelves also some colorful plates and bowls and what most. Then you have color and your not messing with the integrity of the beautiful wood. I'm sorry but I have been refinishing and painting if necessary wood products over 30 years and when you spend so much time with the wood sanding years and years of globbed on paint and you finally see the wood and how gorgeous it is, you wonder why someone covered it up in the first place when you see the lines and the years of growing this tree did for you to eat off of our place your dishes on.
  • Diane Slater Diane Slater on Feb 28, 2014
The only thing I would do is, possibly put some wallpaper as a backdrop, in white, gray, something that reflects your own decor. I would also place some puck light under each shelf to display your collections. Clean up the piece, removing all the old wax, put on a nice coat of urethane. You could also highlight the details or just rub the hardware with a color paste.
  • Liana White Liana White on Feb 28, 2014
It is absolutely stunning as it is .If it is not your cup of tea I;m sure that someone would fatten your wallet for it .It is beautiful.
  • Kelly Patterson Kelly Patterson on Feb 28, 2014
I would paint it white and use a darker wax in the detail and really make it pop
  • Janet Smith Janet Smith on Feb 28, 2014
Definitely paint it. Cream with dark wax or perhaps a soft teal or sage green?
  • Jill Jill on Feb 28, 2014
I love it the way it is, but if your furniture is different style, wood, maybe you can make it match by painting it. I have a hutch I got, then painted it black and painted the table bottom to match. The table top I left a dark stained oak. The brass on my hutch I painted an antiqued gold to match a lamp my dad gave me long ago. With all the curves in the lamp and hutch brass you would never know they didn't go together originally. My only wish was that the hutch was bigger.
  • Cherie Cherie on Feb 28, 2014
I would, since your hubby is a trim carpenter, take off the rococo trim around the top piece and either add plain trim or nothing depending on what it then looks like. If you don't paint it, I'd do a darker stain on it. I think all of us are assuming that it's wood, when it may be, in fact, "fake" wood.
  • Cyndi Cyndi on Feb 28, 2014
I would paint it, and highlight the detail to give it a shabby chic/French country look... I wouldn't try to make it match anything, but bring out it's own unique personality.
  • Lynn5280 Lynn5280 on Feb 28, 2014
This piece is absolutely gorgeous as it is....display your china or hobby items anything,,,,,,please don't paint it...sell it to someone who appreciates wood

@Linda P WOW very very nice
  • Yvette Yvette on Feb 28, 2014
I'd paint the very top of the hutch black, leave the rest of hutch as is, put a patterned paper or cloth on the back of the hutch. For the base I'd leave the top surface, the drawer fronts and doors natural and paint the frame around them black as well as side of base. This way you get to appreciate a lot of the wood grain without it being too much wood.
  • Yvette Yvette on Feb 28, 2014
Oh, and I use black hardware or paint what's on it currently to black.
  • Beverly Hullender Beverly Hullender on Mar 01, 2014
Well, you are so blessed to have a husband who can do very expensive work--for free! I would change out the scrolled molding for a more contemporary look (perhaps even leaving it off completely!) I would paint it black (it "grounds" a room and is a neutral as well) and makes it tremendously versatile for use. Change the hardware, maybe even give it a little spritz of gold if you want to vamp it up a little bit. Just make sure any accent color matches with your hardware--of course! It can be used in a kitchen/dining room to store and display your dinnerware, used as an office bookcase/storage, outside on a covered porch for practical (or just pretty) uses. Be sure and weatherproof it if it's outside! Interested to see what and how it's used! Will be watching!!
  • Opal Opal on Mar 01, 2014
Wow, great deal for you. I would leave it alone or not do anything permanent. Great Piece.
  • GR GR on Mar 01, 2014
I have a business in England upcycling furniture and lovely as this piece is I couldn't give it away in its original state over here! However if I painted it a soft grey and wallpapered the back in toning colours, distressed the paint to highlight the lovely carved details and waxed it I'd sell it straight away.It has a French look about it that is very popular at the moment so I'd maximise that and DEFINITELY wouldn't remove the trim!
  • Judy Judy on Mar 01, 2014
If it's made of solid wood (looks like it is) then use it as it is, refinish it if needed or if you don't care for it then sell it to someone who appreciates good wood. If it's cheaply made of particle board overlaid with faux wood covering then either throw it out or paint it to suit you. Whatever you decide to do please do not paint it if it's quality furniture made of solid wood.

      BRILLIANT !!!! I can't believe i didn't think of that!! TY

  • Rachel Rachel on Mar 01, 2014
By all means paint/stain/wax and change the hardware, that could look lovely. But cutting off the scrollwork would be a mistake that would rob the piece of it's cohesiveness and balance. Have fun with your project!
  • Roberta Eagleston Roberta Eagleston on Mar 02, 2014
Carrie' Creations you are absolutely correct! I think the "shabby chic" fad that people do to beautiful pieces is terrible.
  • Lisa Lisa on Mar 02, 2014
I'd strip the current finish and then use an ebony stain overall, but several coats on the flat surface. High gloss on the flat, low gloss on the rest. Then I would take foam board cut to fit the upper sections and cover it with fancy paper or fabric to act as a backdrop to whatever you choose to display. I am also in the "don't remove the scrollwork" camp. In fact, depending on your taste, you could highlight the scrollwork with your metallic color of choice and match the hardware to that. Whatever you do, have fun with it!
  • Amy Amy on Mar 02, 2014
    your piece, your imagination.....CREATE!!!!!!!
  • I think it would be beautiful painted!! Such pretty details that could be accented!! What a wonderful piece that was left behind for such a creative couple!! Have fun!!

If you plan to sell it in the UK, then redo as Gerry suggest.
  • Roberta Eagleston Roberta Eagleston on Mar 04, 2014
Yes, what is popular in UK isn't necessarily good here in US. Do what will tie in to your decor.
  • CynK CynK on Mar 04, 2014

Black and slightly distressed would be stunning. Or a pretty cream and distressed. It's a great piece, but dated. Painting would definitely update the look.

I never have enough storage space for craft supplies, so I would paint it and use repurposed containers to display and have ready access to my craft supplies. Or do the same thing and use it in the kitchen with frequently used kitchen items displayed. It all boils down to where would it be the most useful to you?
  • Wanda Stivison Wanda Stivison on Mar 07, 2014
Oh man! That would make me a wonderful supply cabinet for all of my arts and crafts! Please say you don't want it and I will have my granddaughter in Oregon drive it across to Ohio for me. LOL Makes me want to paint an aqua. On the doors that have had odd angle design, makes me want to paint it into a tree with it being a big branch. If it will be used as a book shelf, you could paint a boy or girl sitting against the tree reading a book. or make a rope swing hanging from the branch. On the drawers you could put the words, Fairy Tales, Day Dreamer or favorite book titles, like Alice in Wonderland, etc. Maybe even Cheshire cat would be in that tree. Or make it an Alice in Wonderland theme with teapots and dishes. in it. Then I would paint it black and red and white. Lots of ideas to do with that cabinet! I guess it depends on what you want to use it for.
  • Linda Sutter Linda Sutter on Mar 08, 2014
I think I would decoupage the drawers with old vintage looking maps. Maybe keep the same color or Paint and glaze it to play off the map colors. Nice piece could be used for many things. Have Fun
  • Beth Hall Beth Hall on Mar 09, 2014
Is it all one piece? Can you take the shelves off the cabinet? If it comes apart, you could use the bottom underneath a wall mount tv as a component and dvd storage etc (take out two or three top drawers and use the shelves elsewhere for storage. Or you could paint the back of the shelves one color and the rest another - that would make whatever you put on the shelves really pop.
  • Kat Kat on Mar 09, 2014
this is maple era 1950's if you do keep just resand an stain to your liking add some cool pieces to vamp it up ....p.s. vintage pieces are very desired unmessed up.....
  • nothing that nice left in my house when we moved in LOL do what ever your heart desires
  • Johnavallance82 Johnavallance82 on Jun 29, 2022

In that case have fun with it.

  • Oh wow, I would paint it and then I would add wallpaper to the back walls behind the shelves.
