Yes, my husband uses fishing line when they break, and ties a fishing knot and burns the knot with a lighter to seal the knot.
use fishing line, it is strong

I restrung a simple windchime once. I just used a strong fishing line for the string, and tied double knots. It has held up for almost two years so far.
