Help with a metal roof?

Since we know that hurricanes can hit N.C., I would use 29 gauge, plus the plywood under the wood "beams". The plywood can be painted and easily taken down to insulate the roof if you ever decide to screen or glass in the patio. Check building codes in your city and county. We are required to overlap sheets of metal roofing a certain number of grooves or inches, and no water should be able to penetrate overlapping sheets. The junction of the roof and your house is very important. It should ideally have the house roof overlapping the metal roof, and the actual seam between house and metal roof sealed with the spray foam that gets very hard and keeps out leaks. Best wish 😇

As long as you stay off of it, 29 ga. is all you need. I always put my rafters on 16" centers and at least 2x6s. 1 x 4s placed no more than 24" apart should be more than enough support, but it you do choose to use plywood or non directional fiberboard, be sure to cover it with 80# roofing paper before installing the metal roofing. Check you local codes before spending a lot of money. Hope this helps!

Hi Joanne :) First and foremost make sure you have the legal paperwork taken care of that your city or county requires BEFORE you get started with this. You sure don't want to get started and then have to tear it all out because you didn't have the proper licenses to do the work. Check with your local building codes about the underlayment required by the laws of your area before laying your roofing. Some may require wood strips be laid down PLUS plywood nailed onto them; other states requite just the wood stripping, and others only the plywood. There are places, I've HEARD that will allow overlayment of roofing on top of existing roofs. CHECK TO BE SURE WHAT IS REQUIRED WHERE YOU LIVE!

Your best bet is to check with professionals as their recommendation. You at least want to use what is recommended in case you would ever have to file an insurance claim and insurance could use it against you.
