I would think it would be pretty stiff to walk on if you painted it.

we need to get wheelchair across it. Thought if I thinned it out some and spread on with rags it would cover the ugly berber

I have not done this, but I recently researched a project where a DIY-er painted a chair. That would be similar since both the rug and chair are made of fibers. After the paint dries, the chair no longer feels like material, but more like vinyl, so I'm not sure you would want this result on your carpet. When I was thinking about doing this, I found that there is a paint sold on Amazon.com especially for painting fabrics so that they don't feel like they have been painted. I will tell you that my son painted the carpet in his older model truck when it became so dirty that he couldn't get it clean. He used cans of spray paint to paint the carpet black, and it actually looked good and didn't feel hard from the paint. That was many years ago and I don't remember what brand /type of spray paint he used. Best of luck on your project!

my mother used Ritt fabric dye on whool car. She put purple on grey. She sprayed it on. You would never have known if she wasn't so proud of herself
