Painting an old barn board with wash not a paint . Color blue

Hope to put decals on the board and lean against front of house during holidays.
one side will have christmas, perhaps spring on the other. I'd like the back ground
a blue but would like to be able to see beauty of the barn board beneath the blue wash. Hoping wash will also protect from weather.
