What are the best things to add to the garden to amend the soil?

Our garden did not perform well (except for the tomatoes) this year. We did a soil sample with our extension office last year and they suggested adding nitrogen, which we did, but it actually made things worse.

Try adding home made compost. Save up your (uncooked) vegetable scraps, egg shells, and coffee grounds over the winter. Place them in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. IT will produce a sludge like material that will stink to high heavens. About 6 weeks prior to planting time add this material to your soil and turn with a pitchfork. Mix it well. Then let it sit until planting time. You can often get the buckets for low cost (or free) from sub shops and similar here pickles and peppers come in them. Check around. Great fertilizer for free.

Once your tomatoes are growing add 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt to the soil around the base of the plant. Do this every 4-6 weeks. You will have great tomatoes.
