If you go to a nursery, or big box do-it-all center, they sell these little cups that hang above the ummingbird feeder (between the humming bird feeder and whatever you are hanging the feeder from). You just keep water in it and the ants will stay away. It works kind of like a moat. Ants won't cross water.

I spray mosquito spray (Off) on it and I don't have that problem anymore. It doesn't harm the hummingbirds. Hope this helps.
