my cabinets are the same color as the table but I would prefer a darker table top and matching chairs. I 'd also consider an island. no process that's too costly or smells. it would have to be done 'indoors' because I don't have outside space or garage. thanks

Sand the table thoroughly and stain the top a dark cherry or any other dark color you like then you can seal it with polyurathane.

Don't think you will find a restaining process that isn't rather potent. You would definitely need to be able to have the windows open. Depending upon your finish you may be able to take steel wool and go across your table and then use a stain and poly combination so you don't have the double smell problem. It just depends upon what the Finish is on the top of the table if it's a polycoat you will have to sand it.

Can't see the rest of your decor, but perhaps staining the tops a dark walnut and painting the legs and chair backs black would work for you. I used Min-Wax that was a stain and sealer combined and Behr paint with primer in it to finish my crate storage table that has a wood plank top and was very happy with it. I used a table fan and an open window and didn't have a problem with the smell. Or if you wanted to skip sanding and stain, maybe paint the table top a pretty teal with the rest black.

I'm a huge fan of paint....if you don't like how it turns out just go with a different color or change when ever you need a change.

    Answeeer this Hometalker's

Take pictures from magazines or calendars, your photos, newspaper, store bought fancy printed papers, maps, or even gift wrap paper and then ModPodge it down. Then polyurethene the whole thing to better waterproof it!

Lightly sand the legs of the table and seats of the chairs, wipe down the sawdust, paint with color that compliments something from the new tabletop.

I'd maybe have a glass cut to top the table. Then its really durable. You could fo crafts, baking, cut out sewing patterns right on the glas. Easy clean up and no pins gouging the wood.

For holidays, put a seasonal tablecloth under the glass. Spills won't ruin anything.

I take piece's outside to sand and then bring them back inside to paint. Chalk paint is smelly, but NOT a strong smell. I always sand enough to "rough" up the old finish before I paint a piece. Pretty certain you will need to seal the table top with poly to make it durable enough. Poly is super stinky!! If you have to do it indoors, make sure you can open up all the windows! Feel free to check out some of my furniture projects, and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Have fun!!
