How do I add backsplash to kitchen with vinyl type wallpaper?

It is a mobile home and taking the wallpaper off will rip the wall. Can I prime the wallpaper and add either tile or peel and stick backsplash?

Yes you can. I did this in both mobile homes I've had. This past time I used Kills primer over the area, then painted the whole wall a different color (started with white, but changed my mind to red). I used ceremic 4x4 inch subway tiles, applying them with a kitchen friendly liquid nails type of caulk. Let them dry for 2 days, then added non- sanded grout. Let that dry for overnight, then added a sealer to the grout lines. The picture shows white on the left, but I decided to paint it red because I liked the contrast on the right better. It's lasted about 4 years so far.

I also used Kilz as a primer and then used double stick foam tape to secure old brass tiles behind the stove. Did the same in guest bathroom around the tub surround.

So far, they have stayed up about 15 years--look nice and easy to clean!
