You don't say where you are, but abelia is a pretty shrub. It has flowers and leaf interest. Check it out at gardeningknowhow.com, or any other garden site. Another pretty shrub is viburnum, and smoke tree has interesting leaves and flowers (some are quite large, but there are cultivars that are smaller).
