Does anyone have a reasonably-priced way tomake /build a boy a fort or clubhouse for his 6th birthday? The really nice wooden onesI've seen are over $500.00

I would built it almost like a treehouse mainly to discourage critters. (4-6' off the ground?). I would purchase the 4x4 or 6x6 posts, bracing and frame and build the rest out of scrap lumber and pallet wood. You could start with almost a deck style and add to it over the next few years...it could be an ongoing project as you find old things to use. Old doors or old shutters could be used as railings or sides, pallet wood could be used as a roof with shingles (or rolled shingles). It could be sort of open. A paint tarp suspended from a pole or tree could serve as a tent until it could be built out. Little boys love anything that is theirs and in which they get to participate in building out! Send photos! (P.S. Tell Mom it does not have to be pretty or prissy!)

@Jeanette S Thank you so much for the ideas!I think we will build a platform/floor( maybe a foot off the ground--not sure yet, and put a tent or canopy on it. I know he'll love the idea of having his own little 'fort', as long as he and a friend can fit in it.I can't wait!
