    This is a start.

As for carpeting you may need to pull it up and KILZ the floors. They hate lemon scents so that might be a nice solution. Spray the floors with an essential oil ever so often.

For prevention, the experts all say either look into better litter or perhaps a vet appt. I hope these help.

urine gone with enzyme action works pretty well. Also, I cover the spot with baking soda, let it sit a while and vacuum . The cats don't seem to like the smell of baking soda, so dusting it in the area where they spray helps. Good luck.

i cautiously use peroxide - test in a hidden area first since it has a tendency to bleach some items - first apply baking soda to entire area slightly mounded then leave it alone for as long as you possibly can - I've left some a couple of weeks - this will absorb any additional moisture that is deep below, and some odor , it sould change color and/or get crusty-that's good! When you are ready remove the baking soda and pour a 50/50 mix of water and peroxide modestly on the stain let it sit a bit 30 min or so -then DAB it off with a clean WHITE cloth thourghly- repeat if you feel it is needed - consider a professional if your rug is wool

The only thing that will remove the odor is an enzyme cleaner, and I prefer the tablets that you mix with warm water, its twice as effective as the ones in the stores because its fresh. I get it on Amazon and get the black flashlight so you can find it all, it floresces under black light. https://www.amazon.com/Jackson-Galaxy-Stain-Eliminator-Fizzion/dp/B019YMYNR0/ref=pd_sbs_199_5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=D7BCJS3QP0EW2VACBEB5

Then to deter further you can use No Mark which is rosemary oil and time oil in a bit of sodium laureate, or make your own.

Lastly why is kitty not using litter box, is it cleaned daily, or sometimes they don't like the litter, try some other brands. If you cat was declawed this is a serious problem and the pine litter seems to be the favored one. Also if this doesn't stop the problem, a vet visit to see if they have uric crystals in their kidneys which is painful and another reason they like to pee on soft carpets, fabrics etc.

Some cats will mark walls cause they see cats outside the window and are marking their turf. I do something like get a water hose attachment to deter those cats from coming around otherwise you cat's on constant patrol.

Diana, have you seen the new product from Clorox? It is in the cleaning/detergent aisle. Black, spray bottle called Clorox Urine Eliminator. Safe for use on fabrics, rugs, floors, and other uses. Best thing since sliced bread!

I use a product that is used in port-a-potties to destroy odors. It's NMP - No More Pee- Enzymatic Liquid for Odor Elimination. The label states it is a Green Line Earth Friendly Formula. Works great and smells terrific. I get it from an industrial chemical supply business.
