From Fine Gardening Magazine - "To get bigger flowers, cut them all the way back. In late winter or early spring, these shrubs can be cut all the way back to the ground. Smooth hydrangeas will produce much larger blooms if pruned hard like this each year, but many gardeners opt for smaller blooms on sturdier stems."

There are many different requirements for certain hydrangeas. It is always bet to wait until they break dormancy so be able to tell what the dead wood is and to remove. Cutting them back will lead to all leaves and no flowers next season

Hydrangeas bloom on old wood, don't ever cut the old wood!

Wait! Before you cut them back hard, make sure they bloom on New wood. Some hydrangeas bloom on OLD wood and if you cut them totally back you will not have any flowers. I think Fine Gardening Magazine was writing about a certain type of hydrangea. There are some that bloom on old wood, some that bloom on new wood and some that bloom on both old and new wood. Find out from your nursery or Cooperative Extension unit what you have FIRST. Take a sample and a picture with you. They should be able to help. Also, when you quote from an online article it's a good idea to post the link. Often there is other helpful information, plus it verifies what you posted.
