You need to rake the needles cause they cause acid soil, and then here is a guideline to growing grass under pines... https://www.golflink.com/how_6591_plant-grass-under-pine-trees.html
My dad cleared away lower braches of his really large trees so that there was more light for the grass. Not sure what else you can do. Pine is acidic for not so great for grass either. Fescue grass seems to be the best choice for that type of growing.
The soil is so acidic that the soil has turned in that area, you would have to cut those down and rake the needles and add soil the next year, that's what the landscaper did for our yard.
you will never be able to grow grass with pine needles, they are very acidic.
Try rye grass. I work for a landscaping company and we use it for a lot of reasons. For shade, for grubs (they hate it) for cinch bugs (they hate it too) and for dry spells. Very hardy grass.
Also you can try other plants like ivy on the ground it makes a carpet that you don't have to mow, just trim it around the tree so it doesn't climb it.
Pine needles are acidic and as the trees have been there for all the years it took for them to grow into big trees, then your soil under them is acidic.
i had a huge pine tree with ivy that I let get out of control. If you do plant ivy, just be sure to keep up the trimming. That stuff can really takeover. I do have some in another area because I like the look of ivy, but I'm better about keeping it trimmed now.
