What am I doing wrong with metal affects paint and patina spray?

I've tried it on several pieces of different mayerials...wod, metal, etc., and all I get is Blue sots here and there. I follow the directions, and have tried spraying the rust activator on very wet paint and partially dried paint. Help! Has anyone else had these issues? The pictures and tutorials show a lovely blue finish.

Try spraying a very light coat and wait until it dries before adding another very light coast.
